The Capuchin Soup Kitchen serves the needy people of the Detroit Metropolitan area primarily by providing emergency services such as food, clothing, furniture, and appliances. |
Two distinct populations of people are served: chronically poor people and people who are having a temporary crisis. |
The chronically poor are people who lack effective support systems to overcome problems such as mental illness, substance abuse, physical disabilities, emotional instability, little or no education, and low self-esteem. |
They may never fully overcome their challenges and may need external resources like the Capuchin Soup Kitchen for the rest of their lives. |
Many clients depend on the soup kitchen on a regular basis. |
In order that the spirit and life of individuals be truly healed, the Capuchin Soup Kitchen strives to provide encouragement, direction, and material assistance to Detroit's poor people. |
The Capuchin Soup Kitchen works with other community agencies to promote growth and wholesome independence among clients. |
Members of Dignity Detroit volunteer their time every Friday from 3:30-6:00 PM. |
Every client is treated with respect and dignity. |
Every person who comes to the kitchen for assistance is welcomed, without regard to race, sex, age, color, national origin, religious preference, or handicap. |
Members of Dignity Detroit have been long-time volunteers at the soup kitchen on Conner Avenue in Detroit. |
